My story
At a very young age, I was motivated towards painting when I received best painting award in an art competition organised by Baháʼí Association in Sindri, India which allowed me to play and experiment but it remained a hobby. I continued to develop and refine my painting style whilst I completed PhD in Economics at Dundee University. During this time, I completed several art courses at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and exhibited my oil paintings. My paintings were influenced by my teacher Joe McIntyre, scottish artist. With childcare responsibilities and a corporate busy career as senior business analyst, I gave up my passion for painting for about 20 years, only to be revived during Covid years 2020, when the world was in turmoil and I was on furlough from work. I needed some emotional support for family losses. I took to painting again in a big way, and when I started painting, it felt like the best therapy and joy I could imagine. But I had to work very hard to train myself with self confidence and technicalities. I started exhibiting again in 2023 in which I got lot of appreciation. I was more determined this time and started painting full time as a career.
My paintings are vibrant, colourful and often convey stories influenced by deep childhood memories of fabrics, places and people. Most of my work begins with a desire to express a particular image that feels both familiar and meaningful, such that observers feel a sense of emotional connection to the composition. I use colour, form, texture, movement and imagination to bring the feeling in the viewers mind.
My process starts by finding inspiration in simple black and white photographs, notebook sketches and intuitive mark making. I then create my paintings by layering paints to reveal interesting marks that feed into a broader story behind the whole composition.
I not only paint with oil and acrylic but often incorporate the use of other mediums like charcoal, oil pastels and collage. I paint on a wide variety of substrates including canvas, paper, wooden board, and wood panels. In the past I used to do more figurative paintings focussed on light and shadows but now I paint abstract figurative as well as abstract and I am a full time artist. I am always evolving and exploring new ideas.
